Vented and unvented describe the type of hot-water cylinder, not the boiler itself. Both system and heat-only boilers can be connected to a suitably designed vented or unvented cylinder.

A combi boiler provides central heating and heats mains water instantly when a tap or shower is opened. It does not normally require a separate hot-water cylinder or storage tanks, making it a popular choice for properties with limited space.

A system boiler operates on a sealed primary heating circuit and contains many of the main heating components, such as the circulation pump and expansion vessel, within the boiler. It heats a separate hot-water cylinder, which may be vented or unvented depending on the property and system design.

A heat-only boiler—also called a regular boiler—provides heat to the central-heating system and an indirect hot-water cylinder. The circulation pump, expansion arrangement and other system components are normally installed separately. The primary circuit can be open-vented or sealed, and the hot-water cylinder can be vented or unvented where correctly designed.
